Superman Turns 80 As Action Comics Debuts 1000th Issue
[CLERMONT, FL, February 6 —] The Man of Steel is turning 80 years old and celebrating the 1000th issue of Action Comics. This milestone has created quite a buzz in the collector communities and is bringing back fans of all ages to witness a journey that began with two young men from Cleveland, OH in the mid-1930s. As any good publisher would do, DC Entertainment is rolling out the red carpet and bringing in the top talents in the industry to help The Last Son of Krypton soar above 1000. Joining Superman on this journey is veteran comic book writer and creator, Brian Michael Bendis, legendary artist, Jim Lee, and many more of the comic industry’s best.
Action Comics debuted on April 18th, 1938 with the first appearance of Superman and instantly soared to great success as fans looked at Superman as a symbol of hope when the world greatly needed one. Creators, Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster have created a legacy that has become a beacon of humanity’s best no matter how trying the time. Action Comics #1 printed more than 200,000 copies and was an instant hit. Today, copies of Action Comics #1 have sold for as high as $3.5 million. It is estimated that there are as few as 100 copies that survived the last 80 years, making it an extremely rare and sought-after comic.
Over the last eight decades, Action Comics and Superman have evolved from simple comic book pages to radio shows, television serials, cartoons, video games, and blockbuster movies. Today we look at many of the first comic books as our modern American mythology. These extraordinary characters have been the source of inspiration, exploration, and innovation for nearly a century and we are preparing to witness a milestone that Siegel and Shuster knew would eventually come from the very early days with their creation.
As this milestone gets closer, many fans and collectors are looking forward to see how DC and local comic book shop will commemorate this historic occasion. Mike Jones, owner of The Uncanny Comic Shop in Clermont, FL said:
" For many, it will be a matter of making sure they get every possible variant cover of Action Comics #1000. For others, it may be a return to childhood fantasies when we tied a towel around our necks and jumped from our beds in an attempt to feel the sensation of flying like The Man of Steel."
No matter how you participate in the celebration, many shops, like The Uncanny Comic Shop, will not only be hosting celebration events in April, but will be offering exclusive variant covers commissioned specifically for the individual comic shops.
"We have teamed-up with DC Entertainment to offer our customers two exclusive Action Comics #1000 variants that will be extremely limited and only available from The Uncanny Comic Shop." Said Jones.
The exclusive cover will have artwork by superstar artist Tony S. Daniel. Daniel has worked on many different DC properties including Superman, Wonder Woman, and Batman. Daniel is also credited as the co-creator of fan-favorite Miss Martian along with writer Geoff Johns.
"We are could not be happier that Tony has agreed to help us in creating our first-ever exclusive retailer variant cover and we are excited to be able to witness this great milestone in comic book history." Jones said.
